My Word for 2014 {perspective}

2014-01-01_0001

{photo taken in the aspen forest of Rocky Mountain National Park,

one of my favorite places in the world: magical.}

Perspective: it’s my “word” for 2014

& I pray God does much in my heart through this word & thought process I am hoping will grow in me.

The word has come up several times over the last few months. Many times coming from the wisdom of my hubby after he comes home from the hospital where he encounters death {literally} on a weekly basis. He’ll just say, “Jul, this is a small matter. No one is dying. It’s ok. It’s not that big of a deal…everything will be O.K.” And, you know what? He is right. Who cares if the house is a mess? We HAVE a house. Who cares if work is piling up? We HAVE work that we not only love but enjoy doing!

Yesterday I met with a dear friend who is currently battling stage 3 breast cancer. She & I designed books together for Tyndale House Publishers. We started having babies at the same time & she too has 3 adorable young ones. Through her trial, she is teaching me SO MUCH about perspective. The fact that EVERY day is a gift from the Lord. The fact that despite pain, hardship, and a life turned upside, she has seen the miracles of God poured out over her family in new ways & felt God holding her tight & providing for each step of the way. Most of all, the perspective that all of life is about bringing glory to our great God.

Here’s to what I am praying/hoping for in 2014:

PERSPECTIVE that life is not all about ME, but it’s about God & honoring Him & loving others {despite what most blogs I read tell me: they emphasize that it’s all about YOU & YOUR dreams & YOUR desires… yes, in part follow your heart & reach for the skies, but when it comes down to it, I am not called to live a life that is self-serving but rather to serve God & others}.

PERSPECTIVE that this life is short & moving a mile a minute, so slow down & enjoy the little things. I am honestly in denial that 2013 is over & I am freaking out already that next year my youngest will be in school full time. It will be the first time in over 10 years that I will have a full day sans kids at my feet & so I want to soak up all the time I have with my littles as they are growing up soooo fast.

PERSPECTIVE to think about what will last forever {ie: eternal perspective} & focus on those things & not the fleeting, materialistic things of life and hope that a renewed eternal perspective will deepen my love for Jesus & my love for others & make relationships deep.

PERSPECTIVE to be kept in check about my business: that it is all for His glory, in His hands, in His time, for His Word to get out & encourage others. I am bent on perfectionism, success & play the numbers game in my head, which part of that is necessary to run a “successful” business, but I do not want to get bogged down in how I define “success” & have freedom and joy in pursuing this dream… which leads me right into:

PERSPECTIVE in what GOD has for my life & to have a thankful heart & relish in the things I already have & not get caught up in what I do not have. This mainly deals with my weakness in how I compare myself to others, especially other artist moms who are way more “successful” than I am. I pray this year I keep my eyes on God, what He has for me & my family & STOP comparing myself to others, as I know full well there will ALWAYS be others way better than me! ugh. I am sick of this struggle in particular.

PERSPECTIVE to take care of myself: spiritually, emotionally, & physically. I have finally started exercising regularly & hope I keep it up! I also hope to deepen my spiritual practices of prayer, reading the Bible, and worship through giving thanks to my Father. I want to soak up truth every day & deepen my knowledge of the Word both for myself & to be able to answer my kid’s questions.

Here’s to a GREAT & refreshing & freeing New Year!

Grace & Peace,

Julie

My Birthday Miracle!

2013-12-26_0001

{photo courtesy of HopSkip Photography}

Last week I turned 40! YES, the big 4-0. And I am so excited to share the answer to prayer God gifted our little family. He is so good & in all of the details of our lives. To understand the full meaning of the miracle, you first need a glimpse into the past 4 years of our life. My hubby teaches anatomy/physiology at a local community college {yes, opposites attract: I did not enjoy science in college, though I must say I did help him dissect a cadaver once!} He has always had the “itch” to do something clinical with all of that head knowledge, so 4 years ago he took a sabbatical from teaching to go to receive his masters of nursing at Rush University in Chicago. Full time nursing school took almost 2 years to complete. He literally went back to teaching the DAY AFTER he finished nursing school {ie: no break for him!} & was miraculously offered a full time dream job at a local hospital which we felt God dropped in our laps & how could we pass it up?

The thing was, he spent an entire year working 2 full time jobs: he taught 4 days a week & nursed 3 nights a week {12 hour night shifts} so we basically saw him sleeping or acting like a robot zombie. It was no fun. When people in my life would complain how “busy” they were, I literally had to hold back rolling my eyes or flat out punching them…ha!

His boss graciously moved him to days & even gave him part time, so this past year it’s been teaching full time {which at his college is 4 days a week} & nursing 2 12 hour shifts, oh & plus this semester he added departmental chair to his hat {over achiever, no?!}

We’ve been incredibly blessed to do what we love. He’s been reading Ecclesiastes in his quiet times & over & over the concept of loving your work in life comes up cuz essentially one day it will all be meaningless in a way, so we are big on doing what you love & following your dreams.

At the same time, obviously that pace of life is not one that is healthy for a family! So, we have these 16 weeks of semesters which we try to press through & “make it”… until his winter or summer breaks when he is around a lot.

This fall we were talking about my birthday and he offered things like a trip to Italy as I LOVE to travel, or a new car. One night after work he came home & said that probably the best gift he could give me is to work less & simply be around more & be more present when here. Apparently my eyes LIT UP & I squeeled, “YES!!!!” Soon after that night he wrote a huge letter of resignation to his boss at the hospital. I kept asking him to ask for one shift a week {then he would teach Mon-Thurs & nurse Fridays = PERFECT life for me} He said he would but there is NO WAY she will give it to him, as their floor does not typically allow for that type of role & he is a brand new nurse.

Well, I had some friends pray & felt total peace about our taking that leap of faith & guess what?! Yup! Starting in January my hubby will be nursing one day a week. AHHHHH! I was crying so hard my kids were confused: is mommy happy or sad? Why is she crazy?!

You see, my love language is quality time, not gifts & God knows my heart & what I desire for our family. What grace!

His boss said I am a good woman & she would have taken the trip any day 🙂

OH, I am getting another gift & it is REALLY sweet…more on that later. It deserves an entire post of it’s own.

Grace & Peace,

Julie

p.s. I plan on having a big birthday sale soon…stay tuned!

Merry Christmas! Love, The Chens

2013-12-23_0001

Merry Christmas to you & yours!

I hope you have a wonderful celebration that is full of the love of Christ & wonder of His miracle.

This is our lame card this year. Gone digital. Enjoy. Kind of started as a “gift to myself” … one thing off my plate to NOT do cards this year, but boy do I regret it. We have sent a card & letter to our friends & family for the last 16 years of our marriage & this is the first year I honestly just feel burned out. {I was literally still creating cards for photo clients THIS WEEK!} I have learned a lot for next year though & will certainly make changes. We still decorated, painted, made homemade gifts, shopped {which is literal torture for me}, sang Christmas songs {my favorite!}, and read Christmas devotionals with the kiddos. I had started reading The Greatest Gift, but even set that down in the midst of the “busy” season. {Please note: I am not asking for pity here, & know I clearly made my own bed to lie on.} I have thoroughly enjoyed the many cards we’ve received, especially the ones from my own photography clients! hee hee! so fun to see the final fruits of my work!

This Christmas has also been a heavier one in my heart. This past weekend at church, the pastor spoke of wishing others a “blessed” Christmas full of peace & joy which is found in Christ, rather than a “merry” one, noting not everyone is in a “merry” season of their life. I sat in worship bawling like a baby for my friend with stage 3 breast cancer, another friends whose mom is battling cancer, another friend suffering from anxiety, and the family I just photographed whose 2 year old son is terminally ill & this will most likely be his last Christmas with them here on earth. Ugh. Sorry to be a downer, but that is what’s been on my heart. I need to keep my eyes & heart on Jesus, knowing He is love and show love & compassion to my hurting friends.

2013-12-23_0002

This is our Christmas card from last year. I was honestly tempted to use it again this year, as really nothing has changed. We are in year 2 of Sam doing double duty of teacher & ICU nurse {more on that later: a miracle has occurred!!!!}. He has started leading worship again this year at our church and makes the best rice krispie treats you’ll ever eat every week at our small group we host in our home. He also does all business & accounting type work {you know, the math stuff I hate} to keep my business going. He is the BEST hubby & daddy-bear anyone could ever ask for & I love him soooo much.

I am wearing the different hats of creatively leading Life Verse Design, designing books for Tyndale House Publishers, doing family photography, coaching soccer for my girls, leading bible studies and loving on my kiddos & hubby {my favorite of all}.

My Favorite Little Mister is still obsessed with piano & cello, making it his goal in life to be a future Piano Guy. He reads & soaks up information like no one I know. He can catch any bug out there & cared for Jade our praying mantis for over a month before she laid her eggs & died. He is still passionate about everything owls and creates the coolest Lego models you will ever see! His heart came up with the fundraiser we just did for our church & he truly leads his sisters with kindness and a great example to follow. He is also asking some deep questions about God & faith that challenges me & I love it.

Sunshine Girl is all about reading & soccer & learning. She also rocks the piano & is singing around the house more & more. Her highlight of the year Daddy taking her on a date to the Comic Convention (comicon) in which she dressed up as Cat Woman & was in awe of meeting so many super hero fans, just like her! {she is the only girl at school who carries an Avengers lunchbox} She also has the most tender, giving heart in the world. Her school recently had a book fair & she asked for $35 to be taken out of her bank account so that she could buy a book for each of us. When I asked her what book she wanted, she said she did not have enough money & it’s ok cuz she’d rather give to us! Oh & she is also obsessed with Nancy Drew.

Pumpkin-Poos is my big kindergartener this year! {half day only, folks} I really do not know what I will do without my shadow next year {gulp}. She is still obsessed with dogs & that is ALL she wants for Christmas {too bad I am allergic & will never have a dog in my home to add to the work!} She is going to be disappointed & her 31 stuffed dogs will have to do. She started soccer this year & got 2 goals! So fast & cute but does NOT want to be told what to do by her mama. Can you tell she is my little spit fire? But also full of compassion & will make the best mommy someday. I love to watch her take care of her baby dolls. She is so sweet wrapping them, holding them & reading to them. Her constant passion in life is playing school or puppies. OH & the new obsession with her is Taylor Swift! So funny to hear her sing TS songs {right now she is literally belting out “we will NEVER EVER get back together”}. She is getting some cd’s for Christmas & already has a microphone & we’ve signed up the girls for hip hop dance come January so our Chen family after dinner dance parties will be rocking soon! {poor big brother who cannot stand Taylor Swift! HA!}

Well, that is all for now. I am going to go relax with the family now! Merry Christmas & love to you!

Grace & Peace,

Julie

Let it Snow! {Downers Grove, Hinsdale Family Photographer}

2013-12-11_0001

This past Sunday I had the joy of doing my first photo session in the SNOW!2013-12-11_0002

The family was great & I love how the mom styled their clothing: simple solids & such a variety of color.

I even got them to JUMP!2013-12-11_0003

The kids were total troopers. No complaints, just chills & some red ears (poor things!)

I wish we could have hung out more so I could get to know each & every one a bit more,

but we needed to get the job done. They were so fun though!2013-12-11_0004

12 year old triplets!!!! a 10 yr old & almost 7 yr old.

I think these parents are my super-heroes!2013-12-11_0005

And, little did I know when I designed this card over a month ago, I would get to use it with such PERFECT photos!

Thanks to the “McB” family for braving the weather & having such fun with me!2013-12-11_0006
