Winter Wonderland {in March!}

Downers_Grove_Photography_Snow_Photo_0009

It is very likely that my family was the one & only family in the entire Chicagoland area yesterday who were excited to wake up to another covering of snow. The latest fall was thick & beautiful & stuck to the trees, creating a “Frozen” wonderland. The above is my Pumpkin-Poos celebrating the latest blizzard & our “quaint” little home.Downers_Grove_Photography_Snow_Photo_0010

I took Pumpkins & her bestie to one of our favorite places: Willowbrook Wildlife Center to see how the owls were liking the snow & it was sooooo beautiful. We were the only ones there!Downers_Grove_Photography_Snow_Photo_0011

After kindergarten drop off, I headed to the Morton Arboretum to take a hike & snap some photos. It was so gorgeous & quiet & yet I felt so guilty not having my family there, so after piano we headed on over & hiked till dusk. One of our favorite old Ranger Rick magazines had a story called “Strange Tracks” & so every time we are out in fresh snow, we search for “strange tracks” & this time we found some coyote tracks which led right to “our” Burr Oak tree! We were the first human tracks in all of that snow! SO COOL! We then spotted the coyote in the forest chasing what we think was a rabbit (as we also found bunny tracks) & so we tried to track them both down, but did not. What an adventure!

I LOVE that my children truly have an awe of nature and that we continue to teach them to respect the earth, conserve, and appreciate it’s beauty. God is so amazing at His handiwork.

Autumn Beauty {Downers Grove – Hinsdale – Western Springs Photography}

Downers_Grove_Photography_0001

Last autumn I had the joy of photographing these 4 beauties. Four sisters, all so beautiful & yet so unique looking from one another … what could be better?! It was my third year photographing them & every year it just gets better. I love getting to know my clients and seeing them grow {already dreaming of senior photos with these models!!!}.Downers_Grove_Photography_0002

The light was obviously dreamy.

These are some of my favorite portraits I have ever taken.

LOVE!Downers_Grove_Photography_0003

Their parent are super stars in my eyes, supporting their girls in so many ways.

And, who could not love a dad who puts up with these photo sessions year after year?!

Thanks for the privilege of creating beautiful memories for your family!

FREE Scripture Art Download {from Luke 21}

{Art available HERE in larger sizes}

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FREE 4X6 PRINTABLE DOWNLOAD!

This month my visual assignment for Pick Your Portion was a bit more challenging. After meditating on Luke 21, my assigned portion of the Bible, I decided to highlight some of the instruction Jesus was giving to His disciples concerning the end times. Honestly, this is a hard chapter of the Bible to swallow. It is not the encouragement we are all seeking. It is full of warnings and Jesus instructs us to not grow dull, but be on the alert… keep looking out for Him & do not get bogged down by the worries of this life. Be ready for His coming! This quote is a great reminder of truth for all of us, and I think it would be particularly cool in a boy’s room to remind him of his strength found in the Lord.

Behind the Scenes & A GIVEAWAY! {Isaiah 40:11}

01_Scripture_Art_01

{Art Available HERE}

Isaiah 40:11

He tends his flock like a shepherd:

He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart;

he gently leads those that have young.

I knew I had read that verse before, as it was underlined in my childhood Bible. But, now that I was a new mom, the words leapt off the page at me. What amazing comfort I felt knowing that God gently gathers me in His strong arms, carries me close to His own heart as I cared for my nursing baby. As a new mom, I had felt so insecure wondering what on earth I was doing caring for this helpless little child in the “unknown” as there is no real training for what was to come. This verse encouraged me and gave me hope that God himself would lead me in this new journey I was on. One interesting thing about this passage is if you read the context {as I hope you would}, in verse 10 it describes God coming with power and His mighty arm and then, LOOK, that same strong arm is used to gently swoop us up and carry us so tenderly.

02_Sheep_Photos

Fast-forward about 6 years when I am searching for a local sheep farm to photograph Psalm 23. My 3 children and I are ecstatic to go to Farmer Sandy’s the week before Easter and see her new, precious lambs. They are between 2 weeks and several days old and seriously look like stuffed animals walking around. She leads us into the barn where they are warm in their pens. Those mama sheep see me, a total stranger, and immediately start guarding their babies and bleating at me. I could not get any good photos as they were blocking my main subject! It was astounding to be in that barn, seeing those sheep nervously protecting their young and watch as they literally soften when they hear Farmer Sandy’s voice enter in. The sheer sound of her voice put them at ease. They knew they were safe. They even allowed me into the stall and I chose to focus on Ruth and her baby.

After I created my art with their photo, Farmer Sandy had a whole other story to tell me. It turns out the mama sheep Ruth had hemorrhaged during birth and a few days after our visit, she died. The baby lamb, so helpless and weak was left to be cared for by Farmer Sandy herself, as she gently held that lamb and fed her for weeks with a baby bottle.

In so many ways Farmer Sandy has given me a picture of how God is our good shepherd. Her sheep know her voice. She gently cares for the young. She protects and guides them. She nourishes them. And, I am forever grateful for these “real” life lessons of God’s Word coming to life before my eyes.
